The Body Issue is an edition of ESPN The Magazine that features dozens of athletes in nude and semi-nude photographs, which is intended to rival Sports Illustrated′s Swimsuit Issue. The issue was a response to the decline in advertising spending resulting from the financial crisis of 2007–2010 and late-2000s recession that saw a 24% decline in ad revenues for the first six months of 2009 compared to the same six-month period in 2008.
Therefore the critical question to ask ourselves is what happens when the market is saturated and the spending power of the nations economy declines? Two things always happens…..naked bodies are unleashed onto the public and images of African Americans are allowed to expand. It happened in the 70s when Black Exploitations films saved Hollywood. It happened in the late 80s/early 90s when cable TV expanded to 500 channels, and it’s happening now.
Once again we see in desperate times how Corporations, and people in general, revert to manipulating mans basic needs and instincts in order to survive and make a buck…. But at the end of the day, I enjoy seeing the human body displayed in an artistic form. So enjoy as Sadena Parks talks about her experiences as a minority in the LGPA.
